Ballybough & North Strand Festival of History 2024 & 2025 with Dublin Festival of history

The Ballybough & North Strand Festival of History showcases LWP’s commitment to place-based storytelling and meaningful community engagement. Delivered as a curated programme of nine events across two consecutive years, the festival drew on the rich historical fabric of the area to create an engaging and accessible series of talks, tours, and cultural experiences.

Programme highlights included an SFX talk on the iconic venue on Gardiner Street, exploring Dublin’s music heritage, alongside Memories of Fanny Hutton’s Sweet Shop in Summerhill, delivered by Dublin City Council Historian-in-Residence Elizabeth Kehoe. Walking tours formed a key part of the programme, including In the Shadow of Crokerwith historian Seán Deegan, guiding audiences through the social and sporting history of the area.

Additional events across the two years included talks on Inner City tenement life, exhibitions of local history, explorations of the Jones’s Road Distillery and Dublin whiskey heritage, revolutionary history walking tours, and an online “show and tell” on Irish furniture restoration. The programme also featured a unique blend of culture and community with events such as Where Rock and Religion Rolled, combining music history discussion with live DJ performance.

The depth and richness of Ballybough and North Strand’s history provided a strong foundation for programming, enabling LWP to develop a festival that resonated deeply with local audiences. By collaborating closely with historians, residents, and community partners, LWP brought the stories of the area to life, strengthening connections to place and shared heritage.
